Outage Recovery
World Community Grid's servers are located in a data center in Toronto Canada. Last night, Toronto experienced a record amount of rainfall and flooding. Due to complications caused by this, our servers were knocked offline for the past 12 hours. We are currently in recovery operations.

Beta Testing VINA on Android Devices - July 9, 2013
Greetings,

We are starting a BETA test that is a little bit different than our usual ones. If you own an Android device, we ask that you help us test both the Scripps Research Institute VINA research application and the BOINC client on Android devices. This beta will require members to sign up for a Google Group to get early access to the BOINC Android client.

To sign up for theGoogle Group, please go to this link and follow the instructions. (Note: you will need to use your Google PlayStore login and password to sign up for this Beta test) https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/boinc-android-testing

This will allow you to download the BOINC agent on your Android Device.

After you install the agent on your phone/tablet, you'll want to choose World Community Grid from the list of available projects and type in your World Community Grid member name and password. If World Community Grid is not listed, please choose the option to "Add project by URL" and type in www.worldcommunitygrid.org.

For this beta test, please provide feedback about the VINA science application here . If you have comments or issues with the BOINC agent itself, please post them to the Google Group. You can look for other comments already by viewing the list here, or create your own topic here

The VINA application is used for the FightAIDS@Home and Say No to Schistasoma projects.

Some members signed up for FightAIDS@Home incorrectly
This morning during the launch of the FightAIDS@Home Vina application, we had an error in our deployment which resulted in some users being signed up for the FightAIDS@Home project incorrectly. The users who are impacted would have joined World Community Grid early in our existence and had the option "Please opt me in to new projects as they become available." selected.

We apologize for this error and we have corrected the issue that caused it. Unfortunately, there is no data in the system that would allow us to determine which users had this setting incorrectly enabled so we cannot correct the changed data. To correct this, volunteers who do not wish to contribute to the FightAIDS@Home project should check their settings on the My Projects page.大意：

Say No to Schistoma Beta test - July 22, 2013
Greetings,

We have recieved some new work from the researchers and before releasing them into the wild we would like to test a few in BETA on all platforms (including Android since it's a VINA application). We will be sending out 6000+ work units which will probably equate to 12,000+ results to be sent out. These should run on the short side of about an hour each.

Sorry for the delay in updating. We have worked through most of these issues. Volunteers should no longer see issues with delays. However, until we launch our next project which will have longer running workunits we will continue to be under heavy load and will be watching things carefully.

Stats Update will be delayed for 12UTC Update on Saturday Oct 19th

One of the two hard drives in a RAID 1 configuration on the server where the stats are normally updated has failed. We will be replacing the drive and rebuilding the mirror on Saturday. Due to the timing of the change we will not run the stats in the morning until the work is complete. As a result the stats will run around 16:00 UTC. There should be no other interruption on the website.

New Beta Test starting Oct 31, 2013
We will be conducting a new beta test starting today. This test will have system requirements of:

400MB Ram
512MB of disk space
10MB result files

The initial beta test will have 5000 work units, with a quorum of 2. This means that 10,000 results will be sent out. I will be sending them out slowly so they could take a few hours to distribute. This test will be for Windows, Mac and Linux. Android will not be included in this beta test.

New Beta Test starting Nov 4, 2013
This is a new test for the same application as before from the 31st. This application number will be 7.21.

Fixed issues.
1. Percent Complete not updating frequently
2. Infrequent or lack of checkpoints
3. Prevent large result files from being created (which should keep memory bounded as to not grow as Crystal Pellet reported)
4. Added line in stderr to report file size uncompressed.
5. Increase max uncompressed result file to 15MB

This beta test will consist of 10,000 work units or 20,000 results to send out. From these 10,000 work units, 5,000 will be from the previous beta test to regression test. The next 5,000 will be new work units with parameters to help limit the result sizes of some of the work unit types. These will probably take 3 hours to distribute if histry repeats itself.

New Beta Test starting Nov 5, 2013 v7.22
We are starting another beta test to resolve the issue of work units that would not suspend/resume properly. This was mainly a problem in Windows but has been fixed in all platforms. We will be testing about 10,000 work units again, or 20,000 results. 2 day deadline on the results again.

Also, we changed the auto learn feature on BOINC to allow for more quick work units to return without affecting the expected cpu time. This should help solve the max runtime exceeded errors that occurred.

New Beta Test starting Nov 6, 2013 v7.24
This beta test is testing if we have fixed the issue with the too many exits issue.

This issue appears to have been caused by a change in the BOINC API layer for the research application. Every 10 seconds, the research application will check to see if the BOINC core client is still running. Previously, this check was done by iterating through all the running processes on the system to see if the process id could be found. This was changed to use the OpenProcess windows api call. The BOINC API treated any failure of this call as the core client not being there. However, beta test 7.23 confirmed that in the cases we were seeing it was returning "OpenProcess failed with error 5: Access is denied.". This represents a security policy issue rather than the core client not running. We suspect this has to do with the permission and user structure used when running BOINC as a service. We will pass this information along to BOINC for them to review and decide what to do.

In the meantime, we reverted this portion of the API back to the previous mechanism and have released this as version 7.24. We are hoping for a cleaner run this time.

Cancelled Tasks for Beta Tests prior to 7.24
We have gone ahead and cancelled the jobs for the workunits that were running as part of beta tests prior to version 7.24. Due to the issues with the application versions associated with those jobs some people's machines were running in a loop. This will cause their computers to abort any of these tasks next time they communicate with the server.

As a result, we are also awarding credit to any errored task that is reported back as part of this beta test. This credit will be awarded twice per day for the next week or so.

The tasks for beta test 7.24 will continue as we are closely watching to ensure it remains a stable.

Note: If you aren't sure if your jobs should be cancelled or not, you can simply go to the manager, projects tab, select World Community Grid and then press the update button. It will communicate with our server and abort any unneeded jobs.

Recent website changes
Today, we launched our new Mapping Cancer Markers project, and with it, you may have noticed a few changes in our appearance. As we mentioned in our report on the Member Study, we will be making changes to our website over the coming months to appeal to a wider audience.

Today's changes, which center around a slight re-organization of the website navigation, are the first step to bigger changes coming in the future. The intention is to better highlight the research we support and demonstrate the scale of our volunteer community, while giving you easier to navigate tools to manage your contribution.

For this release, the specific changes are:

We moved functional tools, such as Help, Forum, Download and language selection to a more easily accessible top utility bar, above the website header.
Separation of what was previously 'My Grid' into two sections:

'My Contribution' within the site's main navigation, which groups together your statistics, project selections, teams and results.
'Settings', in the now expanded utility bar. This includes your profile information and device management, as well as Twitter integration and widget.


These changes set the foundations for making our website easier to use and giving our members a richer volunteering experience. We hope you'll enjoy the changes as we roll them out.

Filesystem Full Error [resolved]
Due to a misconfiguration on my part, the deamon that deletes workunit and result files after the job has completed was not running over the past 24 hours. As a result, the filesystem filled up and has prevented volunteers from uploading work for the past few hours. We have cleared enough space that volunteers should be able to resume uploading work now. We will be monitoring it closely to make sure that it keeps up.

Temporary pause for the Mapping Cancer Markers project
We launched the Mapping Cancer Markers project this week and accelerated the first batch so that we could check the results sooner for any anomalies.  Unfortunately, we found a limitation with the default random number generator being used for the project.   The increased volume of results revealed some duplication of computation due to this.   That is, the results computed are valid and correct, but in some cases they are duplicated instead of exploring new regions of the search space.  For this reason, we are temporarily pausing the project and making some code changes to improve the random number generator usage.   We will run a brief beta test for this change and if all looks good, will soon (in a few days) resume the project at full speed.   The nature of research is that it often contains unexpected surprises and this is just one of them.  Members will receive the normal credits for the work already performed.  Thank you for your contributions and support of the project and more importantly thank you for your patience with this.

Mapping Cancer Markers Beta Test - Version 7.26
We are testing a fix to the research application that required us to stop it. The test will require a deadline date of 1 day for these results.

We are going to run 3 batches through.
1. Batch 0000000 from production
2. Batch 9999979 from previous beta
3. A new batch created by the researchers.

Currently we have about 11,000 work units to send out, more will be sent when the 3rd batch is created.

We are starting a new Beta test for FightAIDS@Home - VINA. This is a work unit test to make sure a new parameter works well on the VINA application. We are going to be monitoring the runtimes, but also suggest forcing a restart for these work units. This Beta will be a small batch of work units, about 500 which will have a quorum of 1, but as many beta's with quorum of 1, 2 copies may still be sent out.
