BETA Test for New Project April 5, 2012
Greetings all,

We are starting a beta test for a new application. The first wave of work units will be 1,000 in count. This application is zero redundancy but since it is a new application version, all machines will appear unreliable at first and 2 copies should be sent out.

The memory requirements for this are 300MB. These work units should run about 6 hours on a majority of the machines. Also, it will be available for Windows, Linux and Mac Intel for 32 bit.

The application version number used in this beta will be 6.04.

Grid Server Outage on April 13 from 14:00 UTC until 15:00 UTC
We need to install an minor update to the MySQL version that we are running on our servers. As a result, we will need to stop the database for about one hour. This will prevent the software on your computer from reporting completed results or from fetching new work to run while the database is stopped. During this time the website and forums will remain available.

13日对MySQL进行一次小升级,届时boinc的上传下载将会暂停一小时。

We are going to start sending out another round of BETA test work units for the new project. Again, memory requirements are 300MB and the work unit count being sent are 5,000. As with before, since it is a new app version every computer is considered unreliable and will have a subsequent copy sent out.

Computing For Sustainable Water Linux experiencing stuck workunits
We are currently seeing Computing For Sustainable Water workunits getting stuck on some Linux machines. The issue seems to be limited to machines running 4 or more CFSW workunits at the same time. While we investigate this issue we are limiting C4SW workunits to 1 per Linux machine. If you have a Linux computer with stuck workunits and Leave Application in Memory is switched to off you can get the workunits running again by doing a suspend/resume on each workunit from the BOINC manager. If you have Leave Application in Memory set to on you can either turn it off and suspend/resume or kill the CFSW stuck processes from the commandline.

Extended Outage starting on April 28th at 14:00 UTC until April 29th at 2:00 UTC.
The hosting facility at which our servers reside is in the process of reworking its networking. This requires us to move our servers to a new network within the hosting facility. During this change, we will need to stop the World Community Grid website, forums and grid system.

We will post a message that visitors will see that will inform them of the change and invite them to return after the change is complete.

No action is required by you. The software running on users machines will attempt to reconnect periodically and will thus resuming normal operations once the change is complete.

We apologize for the inconvenience of this extended outage.

BETA Test for Computing for Clean Water - New Target
Greetings,

We are doing a quick test on the new target for Computing for Clean Water. This will test to make sure that the work units were built right before we deploy them in larger quantity to the grid.

The work units will have target-6 within the names. There are only 1000 work units being tested, so a very short beta test.

Beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water - Linux Only
Greetings all,

We are about to start a linux only beta test for Computing for Sustainable Water (CFSW). This beta test will show up as version 6.09 within your BOINC client and will have 3000, work units sent. Please let us know if you encounter any strange behaviors with this Beta within the Beta Support Forum.

Most of the 3000 work units will need to be sent out with a 2 copies as a new version of the app requires computers to become reliable again against that application version.

Say No to Schistosoma project on hold
Due to an shortage of valid batch inputs for SN2S, there will be a gap in new work for the project until more batch inputs can be generated.

Beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (May 24, 2012)
Greetings,

We are about to start a good sized beta test for Say No to Schistosoma (SN2S). This test will be for 2 reasons.

1. To decrease the errors on Windows due to a shutdown bug.
2. Change the project to remove redundancy.

These two changes will make the project have a faster throughput on the grid. These changes if they go well for SN2S will also be tested for the other two VINA applications (DSFL and GFAM).

There are going to be two groups of work units, first group will have redundancy to make sure that our validators/assimilators work properly with the old code. The second group will be run without redundancy but members may see some released with redundancy due to reliability rating with the new science application.

The first group has about 4200 work units which will be 8400 results sent out.

The second group has 7100 work units, which will produce between 7100 and 14200 results.

If you are on a Windows machine running a beta work unit, please shut down your computer while running one and make sure it continues to run properly.

Maintenance Work on Forum and Website Database - Sunday, June 3rd 2:00 UTC until 6:00 UTC
We will be installing the latest fixpack for DB2 during this maintenance. As a result the website and forums will be down during this time. You will still be able to upload completed results and download new work during this time.

This is another test for Zero redundancy similar to the Say No to Schitosoma(SN2S) test that happened last week. This will test a windows restart fix, which worked well for SN2S should have similar results for GFAM.

This test will have 5346 work units sent out with Zero Redundancy, but since it's a new app version there will be multiple copies sent out to machines initially.

Zero Redundancy Change for the VINA application!

World Community Grid is pleased to report that we are releasing a new version of the research application which is utilized by our Say No to Schistasoma (SN2S), Drug Search for Leishmaniasis (DSFL), and GO - Fight Against Malaria (GFAM) projects. This new version has two major enhancements:

1. Corrects an issue that would sometimes cause work units to be reported as errors when a Windows computer was rebooted
2. Changes the data returned by the research application so that we can reduce the redundancy required to validate a work unit

Redundancy is one technique used by World Community Grid to verify that the results returned by your computer are valid. This technique accomplishes this by sending out two, or more, copies of each work unit and comparing the results to ensure that they match. However, for some research applications we can reduce the number of times that we that we send out multiple copies of a work unit by adding additional data returned by the research application and by using statistical sampling in order to ensure that the results returned are valid. This allows us to complete up to 80% more research with the same amount of contribution from our volunteers.

Minimizing redundancy involves taking the following actions:

* Start distributing the new version of the applications and monitoring them to make sure they are working correctly
* Modify the work units that are sent out so that the additional data, mentioned above, is returned
* Reduce the redundancy once returned results are validated

These steps will take a few days to complete. We will update this thread as each step is completed.
