FightAIDS@Home suspended on BOINC [Resolved]

It appears that a set of workunits within the batch 1593 appears to be causing results returned to be different on each computer. We are suspending FightAIDS@Home until we can understand what is going on. We should know more within the next hour or two.

We have talked to Scripps and the workunits for batches 1593, 1594, 1595, 1596 and 1597 contain data that is causing problems. We have only sent out batch 1593 and part of 1594. We will suspend the remaining work remaining of this set and not send it out. The next set of work that we have to send us been checked and it should be fine.

We are looking at how to grant credit for all the work that has been returned. We should have a solution for that shortly. Once we have granted that credit we will be able to resume sending out work (we have to wait until credit is granted otherwise the inconclusive batches will send out additional work).

The validator for FightAIDS@Home is back on and once it has caught up with the backlog of FightAIDS@Home workunits that need validation we will be able to start sending out FightAIDS@Home work again.

The reason that we are waiting is because there are about 1000 additional copies of FightAIDS@Home that are waiting to be sent out that are part of the bad batches. Once the workunits are validated, they will automatically be prevented from being sent out. I expect this to only take another 2 hours.

Some users asked if they should abort the FightAIDS@Home workunits. If you have a workunit that starts with:

faah1593
or
faah1594

feel free to abort it. You are only crunching those for credit.

Unfortunately we have no mechanism to abort them for you without also denying users credit for all the work that has already been performed.

FightAIDS@Home has been re-enabled. Members can now receive good work for the project.

We are going to migrate the BOINC database from running on a 4GB two processor system running MySQL 4.1 to a new server with 8GB and 4 processors running MySQL 5.0. In order to do the migration we are going to need to shutdown the BOINC schedulers for about 6 hours starting at about 1:00 UTC.

300,000 Registered Members

To all our wonderful World Community Grid Members,

Today we crossed another significant milestone. Our virtual community of World Community Grid volunteers has reached an outstanding 300,000 registered members, who have contributed over 93,000 years of run time to help humanity!

This incredible achievement has allowed the completion of the Help Defeat Cancer Project, which shows promise to improve accuracy in cancer detection, treatment and therapy planning. And, the first peer reviewed articles have now been published for the Human Proteome Folding and FightAIDS@Home Projects and are available to research scientists around the world.

Congratulations to all of you for making World Community Grid such a success. As a Community, we look forward to successfully completing our current research projects and to tackling new research projects that will help humanity!

Genome Comparison project near completion
Thanks to our members for their generous contribution to the Genome Comparison project which is very near completion. This weekend we expect to see the steady outflow of work units on this project go down to a trickle as we finish the last remaining batches of work. Within about 3 weeks, all of the final results should be in and returned to the researchers and at that time no further work units will need to be sent for this phase of the project. However, there may be some future point in time at which we revive this project when more sequenced genes become available for comparison.

We will soon be sending a news email about this project's completion along with news about other recent project completions and provide more information about future projects launching soon on World Community Grid.

Some of you who have set your preferences to only contribute to this project will find that your agent may go into a paused state. If that is the case, we encourage you to change your settings to contribute to the other projects. At some point we may reset the preferences for users contributing only to the Genome Comparison project back to the default of contributing to all projects, so that their agents do not become totally idle.

The researchers will be providing more information about this project's results soon. Thank you again for your spare computer cycles which have made this project possible!

100,000 Years of Run-Time and 100,000,000 Results Returned!

On July 7th we crossed two significant milestones. Our virtual community of World Community Grid volunteers has reached an outstanding 100,000 years of run time that has provided over 100,000,000 results to research scientists to help in the fight against cancer, muscular dystrophy, AIDS and other types of disease!

The power provided by our members has resulted in the completion of four projects:

Human Proteome Folding Phase 1
Help Defeat Cancer
Help Cure Muscular Dystrophy
Genome Comparison

World Community Grid's community continues to supply compute power for the FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding Phase 2 projects and in the next few months we will launch additional projects on flaviviruses, climate modeling and cancer.

A heartfelt congratulations to all the members who have made this incredible achievement possible!

World Community Grid has reached the 100,000 years of run time mark! THANK YOU to all our volunteers who have enabled us to reach this amazing milestone! Because of your contributions, results on critical health issues have already been achieved, demonstrating World Community Grid's potential to make significant inroads on a great range of future projects that can benefit the world.

World Community Grid also is pleased to announce that the Fiocruz Genome Comparison (FGC) project is finished. The last work units have been sent out and when the final results are returned, the project will come to an end. This project, which launched on November 16, 2006, will have run for just over 8 months by the time the last results are returned. During this time 146,000 members will have donated 3,800 years of computer time on 280,000 different computers. This is a significant contribution to helping scientists better understand human genes, how they play a role in disease processes, and ultimately in understanding how to devise drugs to combat human diseases.

But the end of this project is really only a beginning. Based on the results, the researchers who are working on this project have a plan to not only use this data, but to also make it available to other researchers. World Community Grid's team will keep in close touch with the research team and will post updates on the website in the Research pages. The researchers will also continue to update their FGC website with exciting updates about this project and the inroads it is making to research.

We still need your help with other ongoing projects! World Community Grid continues to run the FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding - Phase II projects. These critical research projects need your computer time as well.

We also are preparing three new projects that are due to be launched later this summer, including ones focused on flaviviruses, climate modeling, and cancer. We will publish more information about these projects when they launch.

On behalf of the research staff at Fiocruz, in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, World Community Grid's team wish to express our thanks to you for contributing your PC power to this project. With your contribution, this project was completed in a fraction of the time it would otherwise have taken.

Shortening workunit length on BOINC

We wanted to let you know that in a couple of days you will start to receive workunits on BOINC that are shorter then the current set of workunits. Due to the end of the Genome Comparison project, a number of smaller computers were not able to complete the larger workunits from the other projects by the deadline. This change will allow those computers to contribute.

Currently the global average run time for a FightAIDS@Home workunit on BOINC has been about 7.3 hours while the average run time for a Human Proteome Folding Phase 2 workunit has been around 9.6 hours. After this change we hope to see the average run length on both projects at around 6 hours.

In additional we are increasing the deadline for Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 workunits to 11 days from the current 9 days. FightAIDS@Home will continue to have a deadline of 9 days.

Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 - New version for BOINC Linux  

We have released an update to Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 on BOINC Linux. This prevents the application from sending the logging messages into the BOINC message output from the core client.

Release of new FightAIDS@Home application versions on BOINC  

We are approaching the point where we will be releasing the new application version of FightAIDS@Home. This will occur mid to late next week.

This transition will be a little bumpy due to the fact that the workunits we are currently running with the current version of the FightAIDS@Home application can cause the new version to experience errors and compute incorrect results. Additionally, the workunits that work with the new application version will not run correctly under the old application version. This means that we need to ensure that all of the workunits built to run under the old application version are completed and validated prior to the change.

In order to make the transition as quick as possible we will be doing the following steps:

1) As of now, FightAIDS@Home workunits sent out will have a deadline of 4 days instead of the current 9 day deadline.

2) Starting on late Saturday and early Sunday, workunits sent out will have a deadline of 2 days.

Sometime, most likely early on Wednesday, the final workunits for the current FightAIDS@Home application version will be sent out. At that time, there will be times where no work is available for FightAIDS@Home.

In order to minimize this time, we will take steps to get those workunits validated quickly.

All members are reminded that they can check the box 'If there is no work available for my computer for the projects I have selected above, please send me work from another project (this option only applies to BOINC agents).' on the My Projects page so that they can ensure that they receive work even if we are temporarily not sending work for FightAIDS@Home.

Once the new application version is released, we will return to normal 9 day deadlines. There will be one additional positive change to processing - we will be reducing the redundancy to 2 instead of 3 for the workunits. This will allow us to complete nearly 50% more workunits with the same number of devices participating.

Update of the AutoDock research code for FightAIDS@home project  

We are happy to announce that we are upgrading the AutoDock research code used for the FightAIDS@Home project. The new code uses more efficient algorithms which run faster, produce more accurate, can model flexibility in target molecules, and thus can be used for protein - protein interactions. These improvements will allow us to use this code in other upcoming research projects, one to be launched very soon. Details about the AutoDock improvements can be found here: http://autodock.scripps.edu/wiki/NewFeatures

The testing of the new AutoDock code is nearly complete. Meanwhile we will be finishing up certain batches of work units using the old code and then switch to the new code. The data formats used for the new code are slightly different so we need to run the old work units to completion before starting the new work units. Thus, there will be a short period of time during which FightAIDS@Home work units will not be sent out as we convert to the new code and new data. If your preferences are set to run only the FightAIDS@Home project, you may see that your agent is paused for some amount of time. We do not expect this to be much longer than one day, and perhaps just hours. This may happen at different times for the UD agents vs the BOINC agents and we expect it to happen some time the week of August 6 to 15, 2007. No action is required on the part of members. Forgive us for any inconvenience this might cause you and thank you for your patience and contribution.

Release of new FightAIDS@Home application versions on BOINC

At long last we have released the new versions of the FightAIDS@Home application on BOINC. Everyone will automatically receive the new version the next time you get work for the project so no action is required on the members part.

This also means that we have gone back to the 9 day deadlines for FightAIDS@Home.

Launch of Discovering Dengue Drugs - Together Project  

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the Discover Dengue Drugs - Together project by The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, USA and the University of Chicago in Illinois, USA. The mission of Discovering Dengue Drugs – Together is to identify promising drug leads to combat the related dengue, hepatitis C, West Nile, and Yellow fever viruses. The extensive computing power of World Community Grid will be used to complete the structure-based drug discovery calculations required to identify these leads. Students from Lanier Middle School (Houston, Texas, USA) graciously contributed their original writings for this project's screen saver. These writings contemplate how to make our world better, a goal of this project and World Community Grid. For additional information on this project, please press the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here.

In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the Discover Dengue Drugs - Together project. To participate in this forum, please press the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. 不错,又有新项目了,最近开始对WCG有了兴趣,除了其中的FAAH项目内存占用太大有点不爽:)

立刻上去取消了原来的项目,等完成后下载新项目试试。
