new bigbeta project 8103

We're releasing a new bigWU project to beta, 8103. This is essentially a clone of 8102 (based on what we're seeing in 8102, we've identified some more conditions to explore) and thus has identical points & deadlines.
The projects in our 810X series have to do with how influenza virus gets into cells. This is something we do a lot of work on, both because influenza is an important disease and because the process of cell entry by influenza virus is a model to study other viruses as well as things like nerve impulse transmission. Thus the most direct applications are to infectious disease, but we hope to address diseases such as Alzheimer's (where some of the drugs specifically target certain kinds of nerve impulse transmission). There has been a lot of exciting experimental work in this field to come out recently, and our experimental colleagues are encouraging us to do more simulations. Unfortunately, the simulations take time (and we need a lot of simulations). That's where you come in...thanks to the consistent help of bigWU donors over time, we are starting to see some interesting results. We're following those up and hope they pan out.

Project description:
Influenza is both a seasonal illness and a periodic worldwide pandemic disease, responsible for approximately 500000 deaths per year. The influenza virus infects cells via a process of membrane fusion between the viral envelope and cellular endosomal membranes; this is mediated by the influenza hemagglutinin protein. Elucidating the mechanisms common to all membrane fusion events is of great importance.
In these projects, we want to understand the process by which the fusion peptide inserts into the membrane and changes conformation. There is some controversy over how the peptide inserts and what shapes it refolds to inside the membrane. We are comparing to experimental data from our collaborators.
We hope to continue to shed light on the influenza fusion process, getting an atomic level understanding of why and how it happens.
