Herbaria@home is a new distributed project which aims to document and make public the information from thousands of herbarium sheets from university and museum collections. Herbarium sheets (dried, pressed plant collections) can be a valuable resource for botanical, ecological and historic research. Among many potential uses, data from the project can help with climate-change research, conservation, taxonomy and studies of biodiversity. Even just knowing that a particular specimen exists can be extremely useful for a botanist or historian.
Please help us by viewing images of the sheets online and transcribing the details from the sheet label (for example the species name, collector, date of collection, site etc). The project is web based, so there is no software to install. Anyone can help, you don't need any particular botanical experience.
The botanical records created by the project are immediately made public on the web and will also be passed on to national and international biodiversity databases. The project is supported by the Botanical Society of the British Isles and the BCMG, with specimens for the pilot project coming from Manchester Museum's herbarium. Once the project is well-established it will be expand to include other collections.
To participate in the project please visit herbarium@home and sign-up as a user then click on the Allocate Specimens link.
