Web of hope

Even in his sleep, Emu Plains resident John Vandenberg is working towards a cure for cancer, a solution for HIV/AIDS and studying global warming simultaneously.

Having joined BOINC@Australia, John is just one of 40,000 volunteers Australia-wide who dedicate their idle computer time to scientific research.

BOINC, which stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing, allows users to download and run components of complex research projects, becoming part of a global “super computer” that can tackle problems from searching for extra terrestrial life to curing children’s cancer.

“I found out about the program a few years ago and it’s basically a way of breaking up a huge problem and spreading it out over lots of computers so that a lot of people can contribute,” Mr Vandenberg said.

“It’s not just for geeks and you don’t have to have a super-powered computer to run it, you just download the program to any normal computer.

“Anybody could get the file that cracks a problem and finds a cure for cancer or solves a mathematical problem - there are lots of different research projects you can contribute to.”

With a minimum of four computers running at any one time in his house, Mr Vandenberg said he was committed to helping this vital medical research.

“You get points for the amount of work you do, so it can get quite competitive and I am in the top 500 out of about 1.8 million people worldwide,” he said.

“However with four or five computers running all the time, you have to try and find the balance between your carbon footprint and the good work that you’re doing, but I think finding a cure for children’s diseases is pretty important and we also contribute to a program on climate prediction to try and balance that out.

“You don’t have to have it on all day because you can just set the preferences and having it running in the background while you’re on the computer and then it stops when you turn the computer off.”
