Linux is here!!!

　　We are pleased to announce that starting November 1, 2005, World Community Grid has a Linux client available.

　　The Linux client is available to World Community Grid members via the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) platform. After much research, we found BOINC to be to best and most economically feasible solution for World Community Grid. For more information about BOINC, please see the Linux section of Help on our website.

　　To participate in the Linux program, go to the Join Now. From there, you will be directed to select either the Windows client or the Linux client. Once you select the Linux client, simply follow the instructions on your screen.

　　If you have any questions about Linux, there are four ways to get answers:

　　1. Review the Linux section of Help.

　　2. Go to the BOINC/Linux forum and review the Linux questions that others have posted.

　　3. Go to the BOINC/Linux forum and enter you own question and wait for a response.

　　4. Send an email to the support desk via the contact us feature.

　　We hope that you will enjoy using the Linux client. And thank you again for participating in World Community Grid!

大概意思是这样的，WCG 以前没有 Linux 疲态下的客户端，所以在项目发展上存在一些障碍，为了能够更好的推广项目，WCG 的发起方 IBM 公司发现 BOINC 在 Linux 下是最好的运行平台，所以专门为 Linux 用户添加 BOINC 平台添加了插件........

所以说，并不是 WCG 要转平台到 BOINC ，只能说是 IBM 公司太懒，懒地开发 Linux 客户端了，所以搭了 BOINC 的便车.....

IBM 自己把网格计算技术列为自己在最近几年内的主攻研究方向.........所以 IBM 不会傻到放弃 WCG 自身的平台，转到不如 Grid.org 平台成熟的 BOINC 平台上........IBM 还准备靠着网格计算平台挣大钱的........

而且我感觉一般所说的网格，也就是ibm搞的那些东西，似乎和这种volunteer computing还是有很大差异的，ibm关心的应该只是项目的科学内容吧？

我可没说 grid.org 是 IBM 参与开发的.....

IBM 设计了 WCG 的核心计算程序，然后挂靠在成熟的 grid.org 平台上......就像很多项目设计了各自的核心计算程序，然后挂靠在 BOINC 平台上一样.....

wcg核心主要就是rosetta那套东西吧，感觉ibm在这些方面基本就是“拿来主义”：）

win版不用换的吧，只是通过boinc增加了linux客户端

Why does World Community Grid require version 5.2 or higher of the BOINC client?
World Community Grid requires version 5.2 of the BOINC client because we have configured the system to communicate with the BOINC client over SSL. Only version 5.2 and higher of the BOINC client are able to utilize SSL. SSL is a technology that encrypts all communication between the client and the server. This provides greater security for our members.

If you attempt to use an older version of the BOINC client, then you will see an error in the BOINC client log file.

说想通过 BOINC 运行 WCG，必须使用 BOINC 5.2 以上版本，请注意！
