RiojaScience @ home is a joint initiative of the company Knet Communications and the University of La Rioja with the aim of providing research groups Rioja intensive computing platform, much higher than currently available on their personal computers or workstations . The initiative has received funding from the Economic Development Agency of La Rioja (ADER) and the entire University of La Rioja. Over time, this platform could become the most powerful computer in the Community.
The computing power of this new infrastructure is based on two key concepts. First, the infrastructure is designed for home users on a voluntary basis, to grant the use of their computers when not in use. In this way, more users surrender their computing power teams will reach the platform. Interested parties may subscribe to the project via the web www.riojascience.com .
Moreover, it can exploit the computing power of graphics cards of computers, also called GPU and used primarily for image processing. In computers that have GPU, this card will perform the mathematical operations and can accelerate from 5 to 20 times the calculations traditionally central processing unit (CPU).
Applications RiojaScience @ home are varied. They can range from the search for intelligent life in space (objective of the project SETI @ home), to research into new drugs, to improve weather forecasting or simulating the behavior of proteins.
The first scientific project that will work RiojaScience @ home belongs to the realm of physics and chemistry. This is a project of the Research Group of Kinetics and Dynamics of Chemical Reactions at the University of La Rioja. Reactions will be studied in gas phase and in solution, namely we will study the molecular dynamics of narlaprevir, a potential drug for the disease of hepatitis C.
