Dear Feynord,
We received your email and thank you for giving us the opportunity to share how we worked with Kaplan to come up with these ads, billboards, bus signs, subway signs, etc. throughout the city a couple of years ago. I assume you saw the attached “I <3 NWE YROK” ad.
The statistic is from the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy (http://nces.ed.gov/naal/index.asp), which found that 22% of New York state residents lacked basic prose literacy skills in 2003. The study, which was also conducted in 1992, showed a 6% increase in adult illiteracy in New York state (from 16% to 22%).
The lack of basic literacy skills among adults is appalling to us at Jumpstart, and underscores the importance of working with children in their early years. Time and again, economists, researchers, and teachers tell us that the quality early education is the best way to ensure the long-term success of children and of our entire country. Children who complete quality early education programs do better in school academically and are less likely to drop out, require special education, remediation or be incarcerated. We highlighted the adult literacy statistic because its evidence of an ever-widening achievement gap in America; and we fight that gap every day by providing young children with a critical “jumpstart” on their education, before it’s too late.
I hope this addresses your question. Please feel free to contact me if you want more information.
Regards, Janice Goldfarb |
