Work units for Target-8 are now available for the Help Fight Childhood Cancer project and users should be able to get work units for the project again. Help Fight Childhood Cancer will continue to run at a lower than normal priority as the project buffers are filled but should reach normal priority within a few days.

The Computing for Clean Water project has been resumed with a new target (target05). Work units for this target will run about twice as fast as previous targets.

Backend Work Being Performed
We are doing work on the servers that perform validation of results returned. As a result there are long delays at the moment on work being validated.

Extended BOINC Server Outage Planned from 21:30 UTC Jan 13 through 8:00 UTC Jan 14th
We are going to be upgrading our database for the BOINC systems from MySQL 5.0 to MySQL 5.5. There have been substantial improvements in the MySQL database performance between these releases, and as we continue to grow, we need this additional performance.

In order to accomplish this change, we will need to stop all access to the BOINC database during this change. This will allow us to take a clean backup of the database and then upgrade the system. Due to the size of the database, we expect it to take some time to do this upgrade and thus the length of the outage.

During the outage the website and forums will work (except for the result status page which queries the BOINC database). Additionally, clients will be able to update result files and download input files. However, clients will not be able to communicate with the server to report completed results nor obtain new work to process.

Additionally, this change window occurs during the end of day statistics process. We will defer the end of day statistics process until after the database upgrade is complete.

We apologize for the disruption, but it is necessary to support the continued growth in your contribution.

Reduced HFCC project priority
We have reduced the feeder priority of the Help Fight Childhood Cancer project as we are nearing the end of target-8. This means that users with multiple project selected are less likely to get HFCC work units, however users with only HFCC selected should continue to get work units without interruption. The next target is estimated to be available in May (this is only an estimate) and by reducing the feeder priority, users with only HFCC selected will continue to get work units for a longer period of time.

Reduced DSFL project slowdown
Due to an outage on the research server for this project, we are currently unable to download new batch inputs or send results back to the researchers. As a result, we have lowered the priority of this project to allow the existing supply of work units to last a longer period of time.

Launch of the Say No to Schistosoma project
World Community Grid has launched its 20th humanitarian research project! It's the Say No to Schistosoma project, run by researchers at Infórium University in Belo Horizonte and FIOCRUZ-Minas, Brazil. The researchers at these institutions and World Community Grid members are working together to identify potential drug candidates that could possibly be developed into treatments for schistosomiasis.

Short Grid Outage on March 5th starting at 15:00 UTC
We are performing some maintenance on our environment that will require us to briefly stop the grid database twice for 10 minutes each time between 15:00 UTC and 22:00 UTC on March 5th.

During this short outages the World Community Grid/BOINC software will not be able to report results or acquire new work to process. The software is designed to handle periodic outages such as this so it will automatically try again a few minutes later and no user action is required.

Extended Outage: Upgrading Server Software on March 6th from 14:30 UTC - 21:00 UTC
World Community Grid uses the open source BOINC infrastructure to support the distributed processing of work performed by the computers provided by our volunteers. We are going to be updating this code to the latest version of the software on March 6th starting at 14:30 UTC.

This upgrade involves a number of changes. As a result, we are going to temporarily stop the system and take full backups before performing the upgrade. This will require us to stop things for up to 6.5 hours.

We appreciate your patience while we perform this change.

Beta test for Help Conquer Cancer with GPU Application Versions
We will be starting a beta test for Help Conquer Cancer with versions of the application that can run on NVIDIA and ATI GPU's. We are expecting that this test will be conduct for a longer than usual length of time because GPU is a new environment for us and we expect to face some new challenges while we gain experience working with this technology.

The research application for the project was enhanced by the researchers. Their work is described in a paper published in the Journal of Physics as described here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.or ... e.do?articleId=195. They implemented the changes in their application OpenCL.

At this time, the requirements to run the GPU version of the research application are as follows:

1) Has sufficient performance as determined by a small benchmark run at the start of a workunit. If the GPU fails the test, the application will exit and be reported as an error. You can check for this condition in the log file that is returned to the server by going to the Result Status page (https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewBoincResults.do) and clicking on the link under 'Status' for the appropriate result.

2) It also must support the OpenCl extension cl_khr_local_int32_base_atomics. This is also checked at the beginning of the workunit and, if it fails, will be reported as an error and recorded in the log file.

Based on our testing in development, we have identified some graphics cards that will not be able to run this application version. These will not be sent the application version. However, we know that there are going to be a lot more that we need to filter out. We will be doing this during iterations of the beta testing.

Due to the nature of this effort, we will be conducting many rounds of beta testing in small sets. This will allow us to identify issues and make changes and retest.

At this time, we will be testing all of the versions for Help Conquer Cancer for purposes of examining the credit policies between the different application versions and we will be testing ATI Windows and NVIDIA Windows application versions for the purpose of determining its ability to run properly.

Also - to be clear. There are only GPU versions available for Windows at this time.

This is a beta test to check out the new targets from the researchers. This beta test will help us size the targets and give better estimates on runtimes per work unit. There will be about 20,000 results to be sent out.

On March 22, 2012 (China) / March 21, 2012 (USA) Dr. Francois Grey, from Tsinghua University, will be giving an update on the Computing for Clean Water project via live webcast.



March 22 is World Water Day, a special day established by the United Nations as a means of focusing attention on the importance of fresh water.

In 2010, World Community Grid announced a commitment to water and 3 new projects. Toward that end, we've launched the Computing for Clean Water and the Say No to Schistosoma projects. Later this year, we'll be announcing the third water project for Watershed Sustainability.

To commemorate this year's World Water Day we are conducting a webcast featuring Dr. Francois Grey, from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, who will provide an overview and update on the Computing for Clean Water project.

The webcast will take place starting promptly at:

There is a new Beta test under way that will help fix two things.

1. The Windows shutdown errors
2. An image overlap issue with the screen saver graphics

This test will include 3000+ work units or 6000+ results.
