THREE NEW EINSTEIN@home PAPERS
Submitted on 26 Jul 2017 7:43:21 UTC
Three papers full of new Einstein@Home science are available now on the arXiv preprint server.First low-frequency Einstein@Home all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves in Advanced LIGO data describes our first results from a search in data from the first observation run “O1” of the Advanced LIGO instruments. We did not detect any signals, but our upper limits are the most stringent achieved to date.

Our result paper is accompanied by two papers describing innovative methods used in the search.  An adaptive clustering procedure for continuous gravitational wave searches and A new veto for continuous gravitational wave searches are available on the arXiv, too.

All three papers have been submitted to Physical Review D for peer review and publication. We will keep you posted on the progress.

2017.07.26 Einstein@home
First low-frequency Einstein@Home all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves in Advanced LIGO data

Einstein@Home: Project downtime on Tue Jan 23rd

Hi everyone,

We are going to shut down the project next Tuesday, Jan 23rd at around 10 AM CET for an upgrade of our database backend systems to make them ready for the years to come. We're going to upgrade hardware parts, operating systems as well the databases themselves, which is why we need to shut down the entire project, including the BOINC backend and this very website.

Generally you don't have to do anything at your end.

Einstein@Home:

EINSTEIN@HOME DISCOVERS FIRST MILLISECOND PULSAR VISIBLE ONLY IN GAMMA RAYS

Submitted on 28 Feb 2018 19:13:00 UTC
Einstein@home has found two previously unknown rapidly rotating neutron stars in data from the Fermi gamma-ray space telescope. While all other such millisecond pulsars have also been observed with radio telescopes, one of the two discoveries is the first millisecond pulsar detectable solely through its pulsed gamma-ray emission. The findings raise hopes of detecting other new millisecond pulsars, e.g., from a predicted large population of such objects towards the center of our Galaxy.
Read more in this joint press release by the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover and the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn. The publication appeared in Science Advances.
We would like to express our gratitude to the tens of thousands of Einstein@Home volunteers who have donated their CPU time to the project. Without them the survey could not have been performed and these discoveries could not have been made. The two discoveries reported now and the volunteers whose computers made them are:
  • PSR J1035−6720: “WSyS”; Kurt Kovacs, of Seattle Washington, USA; and the ATLAS Cluster, AEI, Hannover, Germany.
  • PSR J1744−7619: Darrell Hoberer, of Gainesville, TX, USA; the ATLAS Cluster, AEI, Hannover, Germany; Igor Yakushin of Chicago, IL, USA and the LIGO Laboratory, USA; and Keith Pickstone of Oldham, UK.

Certificate update - please update old BOINC clients
April 13, 2018
Due to Google removing trust for Symantec certificates, we need to update our SSL certificate. This will happen on Monday (Apr 16). The new certificate will ensure compatibility with new webbrowsers, but BOINC clients older than v7.4 may no longer be able to connect. If at all possible, please update your BOINC client. If you are deliberately using an older BOINC client, please ensure that the "ca-bundle.crt" file is updated (instructions will be issued).
Behind the scenes we are trying to get a certificate that works with older clients as well as new browsers, but currently that doesn't seem to work out.

Update: Changed date to Monday April 16th 2018. Google will update Chrome on Tuesday April 17th.

GDPR: restricting access to project statistics downloads
June 13, 2018

Hi everyone,
we'd like to announce that we're going to disable anonymous access to our project statistics downloads, becoming effective tomorrow, June 14th at 15:00 CEST. The reasoning behind this move is the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and its obligation concerning the publication of personal information of our users. We've discussed this matter with our community beforehand and found a way that seems to be acceptable for most.
Fear not, the following services and projects already registered individual access accounts with us and will therefore be able to gather our statistics data as usual:
  • BOINCstats
  • BOINC Combined Statistics
  • Free-DC
  • GridRepublic
  • Gridcoin

We're also planning to add a new feature that will allow individual users to fetch their statistics data automatically and in machine readable form (presumably XML).
We're going to announce that and further related changes as soon as they're ready.

Cheers,
Oliver

  • BOINCstats
  • BOINC Combined Statistics
  • Free-DC
  • GridRepublic
  • Gridcoin

NEW E@H RESULTS PAPER AVAILABLE ON ARXIV

A new paper describing the results of the O1MD1 Einstein@home search is now available on the arXiv preprint server at https://arxiv.org/abs/1903.09119 . While no astrophysical signals were found, "Results from an Einstein@Home search for continuous gravitational waves from Cassiopeia A, Vela Jr. and G347.3" describes the search and sets upper limits on the amplitude of continuous gravitational waves from the three supernova remnants at an unprecedented level. of sensitivity. The paper will now be submitted to a journal for peer review and publication.

The three targets were chosen based on the estimated age of and distance to supernova remnants, based on an optimisation procedure that we developed in the past years. While we can see those objects in X-rays, no associated pulsations in radio waves or any other part of the electromagnetic spectrum have been detected so far. This means that the spin frequency of these objects is unknown, and hence we have to search over a very broad range of frequencies and possible frequency evolutions. It is only with the help of the massive computing power provided by the volunteers of Einstein@Home that we were able to achieve these results.

As our methods, computing power and the sensitivity of the detectors improve, we continue the hunt for continuous gravitational waves and we invite the E@H volunteers to continue to support us in this exciting science quest.
